The assessment process

Here’s what to expect:

Your first appointment is normally a 1-hour session that gives us a chance to get to know your child and discuss your concerns. Children and parents/caregivers attend the clinic together to talk about your child’s development, daily routines, and what is most important to your family.

Together, a case history form is completed (information on development, medical history, education, social and family). [1,7]

The speech pathologist will then assess your child using a variety of formal and informal tools [1]

This may include:

  • Observation during play and conversation
  • Fun, structured activities
  • Screeners (quick checks of speech and language development)

If more details are needed, we may recommend formal testing:

  • Structured and standardised tests designed to compare your child's skills to typical development
  • This may be completed over 1-2 sessions, depending on the child and their needs

[1]

Assessments are designed to feel relaxed and enjoyable for your child. They are completed in a fun, positive environment to ensure your child feels comfortable.

We make sure to use a combination of structured (formal) assessments and informal methods like play and observation. Formal tests can help us to compare your child’s skills to what’s typical for their age, but does not always show how they communicate in everyday situations. By watching and listening to how your child communicates naturally, we can get a full picture of your child’s unique abilities. [2]

After the assessment

Following the assessment, we will provide a summary, including recommendations. This may include:

  • A written report
  • Organising ongoing therapy sessions
  • A plan for monitoring progress [1]
